How to Use Gmail on your Windows Mobile device to replace your SMTP server- and no additional downloads - Free and 10 easy steps!

Hi Ladies and Gents,
Commodore here to bring you a quick tip. I know I haven't written in a while, but I haven't forgotten about aTa, just been working on some back-end stuff here if anything at all. But this is a tip I'm sure will benefit lots of users of WM5 devices who have trouble with their email. I've gone from the 8125 to the 8525, hoping that the issue would be resolved in the 85, but it hasnt. So now I'd like to fill everyone in on how to achieve this using a FREE Gmail workaround, which will allow you to send email from your phone, without any additional programs to install in 10 easy, painless steps.

Step 1. Create a Free Gmail account, and in Settings, under Pop/Forwarding, enable the pop mail feature.
Step 2. Open your email app in WM5, go to Tools -> New Account.
Step 3. Enter your email address in the field. WM5 will attempt to automatically discover the settings which could go either way. Click next.
Step 4. Type your full name, your full email address as the user name (ie. blahblah@gmail.com), and your password.
Step 5. Choose Account type "POP3".
Step 6. Your incoming mail server is pop.gmail.com. Your outgoing mail server is smtp.gmail.com.
Step 7. Click Options -> Click Next, skipping the "connect and check for messages every:" screen.
Step 8. Check the box that says "Incoming mail server requires SSL authentication"
Step 9. Check the box that says "Outgoing mail requires authentication".
Step 10. Uncheck the box that says "Use seperate settings"

Skip through to the end of the dialog and you should be all set. So far Gmail is one of the only outgoing servers that work with my 8525 Hermes. If you know any others, hit us up.

Update: You can use the outgoing settings in this how-to for all the rest of your mail accounts, I used this outgoing configuration with my Optonline, Mac, and Corporate email and it works like a charm. Let us know how it worked out for you. - C64

For the meantime, stay cool. This quick tip brought to you by http://www.asktheadmin.com/
