Is There A Way To Automatically Zip Attachments In Outlook Express? Beta Software - Win Zip Email Companion.

Everyone out in Admin Land knows we use Zip programs to make a bunch of big files into a smaller file. This is handy for quick emails - to fit a lot of data in a small place. With that said

we just finished installing and testing WinZip's new Email Companion Beta 2.0 and So Far its really cool. But if the person on the other end is easily confused... - well you know the rest. But on a daily basis it will automatically zip two or more of my attachments . Now that's pretty cool. I know, I know you don't always need it. But for the times you do its already happening in the background. And seeming starting with XP SP1 there is unzipping support built in compatibility isn't an issue. We have seen it before (1.0) but it not only wasn't as graceful - it wasn't compatible with Outlook Express. Well now it is so whats your exceuse? So lets get to some automatic zipping goodness... From WinZip's Help File

What does it do? The Companion makes it easy to created zipped (compressed) attachments to your Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail e-mail messages. The Companion has many benefits:

  • Easily zip attachments when sending Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail messages

  • Zip, encrypt, and e-mail your documents directly from Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Conserve space in your Outlook data store

  • Save disk space

  • Save transmission time

  • Keep multiple related files and documents together in one attachment
Zipping may help you send files that would otherwise be blocked by the recipient's e-mail system

  • Protect sensitive documents with encryption Despite all it can do, the Companion is very easy to use; just install it and it is ready to work for you.

Let's get started!

Automatically zipping your e-mail attachments. First, let's see how easy it is to zip your e-mail attachments.

  • To start, create a new e-mail message in Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail, address it to yourself, and attach a few files.

  • Now click Send. The Companion will display a small dialog asking whether or not you want to zip your attachments; just click Yes for now.

  • That's all there is to it--you've zipped your attachments.

To see what happened, open the Outbox and double-click the e-mail you just sent. If you look at your attachments, you'll see that they have been replaced by a single Zip file. Double-click the Zip file to open it and see your original attachments, now compressed and organized into a single attachment (you will need WinZip or another Zip file utility to do this).

There are lots of options that control what the Companion does when you click Send. You can set the Companion to automatically zip your attachments (without prompting), change how the zipped attachment will be named, specify encryption, and much more. See Configuring WinZip E-Mail Companion for complete information.
